PC Launch - Finally!
Almost exactly one year after the initial Android launch (and subsequent iOS launch), FlyTrap from Glinkie Games is finally available for PC.
Probably the 1,000,000th entry in the Flappy genre (being generous to myself here), even if it does have some of its own unique charm. So, why make this game? TLDR; I had to choose a goal I could attain in a very short amount of time.
The Glinkie Games Google Play account had been inactive for so long that Google warned me they would close it if I didn't publish something soon. That makes sense. It's not good to have a bunch of seemingly dormant accounts on your service. I get it. When the final warning came with a 30 day deadline, I decided I would like Glinkie Games to stay active on Google Play, so I turned the situation into an opportunity: I would crank out a quick game, I would learn the Godot engine in the process, and I would save my account from deactivation.
It worked out. I got it done 3 days before the deadline, although the the leaderboard and cluster scoring mechanic would come in subsequent updates because I couldn't squeeze those in with the time that I had. With Android complete, I turned my sights to iOS as well, since I hadn't released anything there for a while either. It took a while to get around to the PC release, but here we are, finally.
The PC release has gamepad support to spare you that wear-and-tear on your keyboard, and the flow from "game ending" to "new game starting" has been refined to make it less tedious to grind out a few attempts at a new top score.
I enjoyed the process of learning Godot, and I'm happy with the outcome of this project (all things considered). If you do take the time to try the game, I hope it brings you at least a little joy.
Cheers,
Paul Glinker - Glinkie Games Inc.
